It is a remarkable phenomenon of spoken Japanese in progress that the form expressing "potentiality' fluctuate between -rareru and -reru(eg.mirareru/mireru' to be able to see',the latter form is recent, and it is often referred to as the 'ra-deleted form') .A questionnaire survey was carried out to investigate how these 'ra-deletedforms'are used and are regarded by some foreigners living in Fukuoka city. 80foreign students of both sexes and of various countries served as informants. The processing of data shows the following results.(1) In the use of the "ra-deleted forms,' the order of words in their percentages isalmost the same as that of Japanese natives, in terms both of the length of the word and of the conjugation type.Furthermore, it is revealed that 'ra-deleted forms' are much more favored ininformal situations than in formal ones.(2) In their attitude toward the 'ra-deleted forms', although they know well that the forms are not correct in standard Japanese, their hope is that the forms are acceptablebecause of the easiness in pronunciation and, in some cases, greater clarity inmeaning.
