Two cases of "Neurotic Abdominal Distention"(Kameda, 1963) were reported.Case 1. N. S. 31-year old female (single) : With abdominal distention as main complaint she was admitted to our psychiatric clinic. She had appendectomy at the age of 10 years, and then was diagnosed as chronic tuberculous peritonitis and rheumatoid arthritis. She was constantly ill, so were her parents. For these reasons she had a hard life. Although her conditions were ameliorated by psychiatric treatment, a special emphasis must be placed on her family life, her longstanding illness, considering the manifestation of postoperative neurosis.Case 2. H. W. 45-year old female : She complained of abdominal distention, dispepsis and so on. Before appendectomy she was perfectly healthy, and as a veteran nurse she prided herself she had never missed her duty even for a single day. After the operation she developed the above-mentioned symptoms, and had undergone surgical operation several times. Ultimately she had to receive psychiatric treatment which has improved her conditions somewhat.Her personality traits was, in a word, immodithymic.Clinical findings of these two cases were described in detail with special reference to clinical statistical data from surgical field. An emphasis is also placed on the importance of proper preoperative care for possible postoperative neurotic symptoms, esp. in case 1. Interpreting preoperative phase in a broader sense, it is most desirable to give exhaustive examinations of the history, family life in case 1. and mental conditions, personality traits in case 2. Although the specificity of these two patients differs, it seems that the disease has developed from the abnormal obsession wrought by unstable self-control under constant stress, strain of tortuous life and premorbid personality traits.
