The National Institute of Mental Health was established in the grounds of the Konodai National Hospital in 1952. In the Hospital, since 1949,the research of psychosomatic medicine (PSM) had been proceeded and the Psychosomatic Center (PSC was established in 1955. The Konodai National Hospital is a general hospital, that holds 750 beds, which contains the neuropsychiatric department that has 350 beds. Therefore, it has an advantage over for the practice of PSM as compared with the other general hospitals in Japan. The clinical studies of PSM are mainly continued in the PSC at the Hospital and the intensive studies for the severe cases (especially the psychosomatic disorders of children) are attempted at the Institute. In the clinic of the Institute patients with psychosomatic diseases (PSD) are studied by a team of psychiatrist, psychologist and psychiatric social worker. However, in the Hospital setting, patients are not always treated by a team, due to the shortage of staffs, and each staff is overworked. The Institute and the Hospital are keeping a close contact for the therapy and the research of the PSD. Patients of 811 cases have been treated at the PSC of the Hospital during the year of 1963,but the PSD in a narrow sense should be approximately 30% of the total cases. The majority of cases that treated at the PSC was the essential hypertension and the peptic ulcer. There have been the number of cases with the neurotic overley upon the various organic diseases. Yet the relation ship between the PSC and the each departments of the Hospital is not satisfactory. It has been a discussion upon the matter of establishment of the PSC in the General Hospital, and the nessecity of excuting a plan for the increase of paramedical staffs has emphasized. And I consider that the imperfection of the hospital organisation in general is an impediment to the progress of PS M in Japan.
