This paper presents general theory of convergence of finite element solutions. Common properties of existing finite element models are clarified especially with respect to the behavior of discretization errors. Various models are unified in an abstract manner to propose a method of error analysis for linear boundary-value and eigenvalue problems. Two concrete schemes for plate bending are analyzed by our approach, and numerical results are shown to see the validity of the theory.
