Shock Wave and Viscous Layer Structure in a Rarefied Hypersonic Flow Near the Leading Edge of a Sharp Flat Plate

In the present paper an analysis is presented for the merged layer regime of a hypersonic flow past a semi-infinite flat plate with a sharp leading edge. The analysis is based on the continuum flow theory. The viscous layer solution which is similar to one previously derived by the author is found to patch with the shock-wave-structure solution. The density ratio across the shock and the ratio of shock thickness to viscous layer thickness are evaluated. The results indicate a consistent agreement with the experimental data which were obtained concerning the flow detail by McCroskey et al and by Becker et al.
