The Canadian Indians are expected to be integrated into the major society of Canada, and education is considered to be one of the most efficient means for the purpose. Education in this context involves two aspects: acquisition of basic knowledge and skills, and incorporation of a set of values and attitudes which are assumed to prevail in the major society. This paper concerns the latter. There are two methods at present to achieve the goal: integrated schooling which was only launched as late as in 1960; and the residential school system which has a longer history. This paper is an attempt to evaluate the advantages and the limitations of the residential school system from the view-point of the integration of the Indians. In summary, the residential school system has the advantage of making the pupil accustomed to non-Indian ways of life in a material sense. However, the informal structure of the organization prevents the pupil from incorporating the assumed values and attitudes. This aspect of the situation must therefore be looked after by some other programs. In the opinion of the present writer, conversion of the residential school to a hostel might meet the need.
