This research study investigates the well-known ESL (English as a Second Language) hypothesis that readers read ore effectively in a foreign language when they are aware of and consciously use reading strategies and attempts to verify this hypothesis in the case of Japanese language education. If this hypothesis can be verified for Japanese, this would indicate the need to integrate reading strategy training into the curriculum for Japanese language teaching. The search method for the study consisted of a Japanese reading comprehension pre-test given to two groups of Japanese language learners an experimental group and a control group of equal language ability. After the pre-test, the experimental group was given instruction in reading strategies in which they were trained to consciously use reading strategies as they read. The control group was given Japanese reading instruction for the same amount of time, but with no attention paid to reading strategies. The difference in the average scores of both groups' pre- and post-tests were compared in an attempt to judge the effectiveness of the reading strategy training. In addition, the study also investigated the earning curves of the learners and their psychological receptivity to the training as well as the appropriacy of the experimental method and research design.
