In ancient Roman history the murder of Julius Caesar is a pivotal event, which marks the collapse of Republican Rome. In Elizabethan England Caesar would have been a well-known figure and Roman history plays were often performed. The Roman Republic is based on family traditions and ancestry matters. Images of honorable fathers of the city have formed peoples' minds. But now Caesar's dominance grows so great and it is deplored that fathers' minds are dead. People don't have definite meaning in self-referential Rome, where "men may construe things after their fashion." Brutus and the conspirators think there is no blood in Caesar's spirit and try to kill his body to revive dying Rome. They make their assasination appear as a theatrical event and connect his blood with sacrifice. As Brutus's honorable motivation is formed not by the fact but by the supposition of tyranny, Antony, deconstructing honor, makes their deed appear as guilty parricide.
