In Japan today, more ethical interests are directed toward the brain-death and organ transplantation issues than the artificial abortion ones, and one thinks generally as if there were no problems about the feticidal abortion. But there remains yet a large amount or open question in abortion issues. Why is it so in Japan? I believe so, because a peculiar soul-body dualism has resided traditionally in the unconscious stratum of Japanese mentality. But, on the contrary, in Western Europe and USA, so ardent debats or rather political struggles are fought against or for abortion. Reflecting briefly on the history of moral or legal rules and the present debates about abortion problems in Western Europe and USA, we know that two conflicting ethical principles are offered to resolve the abortion problems, the "individual autonomous freedom" principle from a consciousness-immanent viewpoint and the "dignity of human life" principle from a consciousness-transcendent viewpoint. But, analysing two principles from these conflicting perspectives, we find they don't necessarily conflict each other, for they are both substantially consciousness-immanent. From a consequentialistic perspective, we need both principles to regulate the society, for example, to be aware of abortions as necessary evils, activate the contraception education, spread the contraception methods or set up the institutions necessary for supporting the child-rearing, and doing so, we could establish a life-respecting society.Ethics is a technique to regulate our society and we regulate the norm-ethical action sytem to realize our desirable society.
