Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) directed against human parainfluenza viruses type 1 (HPIV-1) , type 4A (HPIV 4A) and type 4B (HPIV-4B) were prepared in order to determine the antigenic diversity of clinical isolates of HPIV-l and to analyze antigenic variation between subtypes 4 A and 4 B. Some epitopes of HPIV-1 HN protein changed in 1970 s and 1980 s. One MAb against the NP or HPIV-1 lacked reactivity with clinical isolates which were isolated also in 1970 s and 1980 s. On the other hand, the MAbs to HPIV-1 F protein reacted with almost all clinical isolates of HPIV-1. Antigenicity of the NP protein of HPIV-4 was highly conserved between two subtypes of HPIV-4. On the other hand, the MAbs against the HN and the F proteins showed high reactivity with the homologous subtype viruses, but low reactivity with the heterologous subtype viruses, indicating that glycoproteins exhibited antigenic variations between two subtypes of HPIV-4.
