This review of the current literature concerning issues related to the nursing profession in the United States in the year 2002 found the overriding concern to be the rapidly worsening shortage of nurses. Fewer young people are entering the profession, and increasing numbers of veterans are leaving it. The reasons for these trends are widely attributed to cost-cutting measures by healthcare facilities, which result in decreased ratios of qualified nursing staff, deteriorating working conditions including mandatory overtime and increased patient loads, and serious misgivings about patient safety as well as job satisfaction Measures are being taken to improve the situation, but prospects still appear to be grim. Issues related to the 9/11/01 atrocities are also prominent, including the threat of "bio-terrorism," m particular the possible use of anthrax and/or smallpox infection as military weapons to be deployed against the civilian population. A third area of concern is the revolution in genetics related to progress in the Human Genome Project (HGP) , and how the nursing profession can prepare to deal with an entirely new and vital area of healthcare.
