The trade between Japan and Sung has remarkable increased in the time of the Cloister Government and along the trade routes good number of ZEN priests travelled to Sung Their prime purpose of entering into China was to go on a pilgrimage to the Mt Wutai, which was meant to be the extensive activities of pilgrimage and raising funds for consolidation of Buddhism. Those acts were the special task of the sacred men (the recluse). However, around the end of the Cloister Government Period, the pilgrimage type of visiting China had begun to change into that of seeking for the Dharma itself.
