Since the partition of the Korean peninsula into two countries, more than half a century ago, South Korea and North Korea (we will refer to them as SK and NK respectively) have developed their own socio-cultural environment in quasi-total isolation from each other. A series of studies making linguistic comparisons, undertaken since the 1990s in SK, as a part of the 「North Korea Study」 Program, revealed the existence of linguistic differences. Linguistic differences can be roughly considered through two domains : language form and language use. The former means morphological differences due to different linguistic norms and also the appearance of new lexicon coming up from the particular needs of each society. The latter means phenomena such as one word keeping its primary morphological form and meaning, and at the same time acquiring new meanings and uses. Most of the studies dealing with linguistic differences between SK and NK focused on morphological changes so far. However we need to pay more attention to the inner gap of language use, that is to say the difference of linguistic meaning and use. In fact the importance of this matter has already been noticed by some scholars :"On the linguistic differentiation, the problem of the meaning gap is more important than morphological difference."Ko YeongJin (2000) and "The important obstacle in future communication between South and North Koreans would be the existence of these words keeping the same morphological form, but conveying different meanings. That is to say, if the word form is the same, people would interpret it as the meaning they use to know."Kim UnMo(1999).The purpose of this paper is to shed some light on concrete aspects of the differences in language use appearing in primary education textbooks used in the two countries. It follows the article of the previous issue of this journal(Fraysee-Kim2003)in which we exposed the differences appearing in language form.
