Because of their technique and their sence of beauty about the dress, the housewives can save money more easily by careful planning for the dress of their families than those for food or for dwelling. Therefore this part in the livelihood is important in these times when the saving is necessary. Considering these situations and searching for the way of improvement of the home life, we pursued investigations about (1) the make-up of the dress, (2) the state of using the dress and (3) the state of buying the dress. In this report, the result about (1) is discussed. For the investigations, we first selected a set of questionaires, and then distributed them to 400 households of workers living in Tokyo. They were pursued from July 1 to July 10 in 1974. The following discussions were made examining the 309 replies (about 77%). As for the make-up of the dress, thoss who have more experience about the make-up excel in the make-up than those who have less, and the older excel the younger. Many housewives consider that clothes of their own making are good because of the economy, and also that it is desirable to make their own everyday clothes. In consequence, it is necessary to improve the technique of make-up of the dress, because of their higher necessity in the livelihood.
