The relations between H reflex and relative EMG power in low frequencies were studied to know the influence of Ia input on the compression of a surface EMG spectrum toward lower frequencies (EMG slowing). Surface EMG and H waves were recorded from soleus during a fatiguing contraction and non-fatiguing contractions. H reflex was induced at six levels of stimulation intensity. Seven subjects kept an isometric planter flexion at 20 percent of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) for 20 minutes as a fatiguing contraction. H reflex was recorded for every 4.6-5.6 seconds. Isometric planter flexions at 20%MVC and at its half EMG amplitude were performed for 8 seconds under ischemia as non-fatiguing contractions. The non-fatiguing contractions were repeated for every fifth or second minutes until the contraction could not be performed. Relative power in 8-42Hz to the power in 8-400Hz of surface EMG was used as the index of EMG slowing. The EMG slowing during the fatiguing contraction was small in most case and the low frequency rate increased in a case. H wave increased during fatiguing contraction. But H waves decreased steeply in the latter half of the contraction in three cases. H reflex disappeared by the ischemia of about 20 minutes. After H reflex disappeared low frequency rate of EMG increased in a case and decreased in a case. The changes of EMG spectrum could be related with the changes of H reflex only in two subjects. Ia afferent was not concluded to be the main cause of EMG slowing.
