Following the submission of the final report by the Leisure Board in the Council of Industrial Structure in November 1974, our research group at Leisure Development Center launched a basic research project -- New Human Beings, New Society -- that continued for five years from April 1975. The purpose of the project was 1) to examine – as an interdisciplinary study from the perspectives of humanities, social and natural sciences – the present situation and major issues of leisure time today and 2) to created a long-term vision for the future. Since we were not able to discuss thoroughly true nature of "leisure concepts" at the Leisure Board, we, above all things, dealt with this subject and then develop the future vision for our leisure society. First of all, we examined basic literature on the philosophy of leisure written by Sebastian de Grazia and Josef Pieper, both of whom highly appreciate Aristotle's philosophy of leisure and find its essential significance for our present-day society. Then we scrutinized Aristotle's writings on leisure and tried to interpret them as Grazia and Pieper experienced. The present essay as a part of may personal history seeking for the concept of leisure focuses on my recollection of my consideration and speculation from reading experiences of Aristotle, Grazia, and Pieper.
