At the Commodity Museum of Meiji University a survey on visitors was held for approximately a year to understand the actual state of visitors and the evaluation from outside using 2 methods, questionnaire and indoor observation. Questionnaire : November 10, 1999 - May 9, 2000 (planned exhibition period) Indoor Observation : May 18, 2000 - October 18, 2000 (permanent exhibition period) In the beginning questionnaire was used by itself, however, only 4% of the whole filled in the questionnaire. Therefore, it was necessary to have more visitors as the survey subject on top of those who answered the questionnaire to understand a visitor's image close to the actual condition and the evaluation on exhibits. Then indoor observation was freshly used to record the length of visits and conversation of visitors to support the questionnaire. There are still imperfect points such as the time lag between the survey periods, and the difference in their survey items. However, through these surveys the following matters were recognized: 1. The number of visitors from "young age groups" was more than expected, 2. The average viewing time of visitors is very short, 3. The exhibit on the production process of traditional crafts that are considered the characteristics of the Commodity Museum is not accurately understood by some of the visitors.
