Eight undergraduate students participated in an experiment which was designed to examine the effects of added noises on selective identification of letters. The reaction time of pressing buttons to the target was measured under combined conditions of arrangement of accompanying noises which result in the response opposite to the target and added noises inserted between the target and the noise letters. The target with the same added noises as the target was identified faster than any other condition of added noises when the added noises were arranged adjacent to the target There was no difference in reaction time among the conditions of added noises when the added noises were arranged distant from the target The results supported Watanabe (1985)'s hypothesis It is the added noises which result in the same response as the target that reduce the interference from the accompanying noise letters The noises adjacent to the target are most important in determining the effects of noises on selective identification of letters. Furthermore, the results suggested that the interference increasing with the number of noises are mainly attributable to the decrease in the spatial distance between the target and the next noises which result in the response opposite to the target.
