We describe four patients in whom calcified atherosclerotic lesions were detected near the bifurcation of the common carotid artery on panoramic radiographs. These patients underwent carotid ultrasound studies to evaluate atherosclerotic changes inside the carotid artery. One patient had a history of hypertension, one had type IV hyperlipemia, and one had type Ha hyperlipemia. No patient had a history of previous cerebral infarction or atherosclerosis or had any clinical symptoms associated with cerebral infarction, such as headache, vertigo, paralysis, or ataxia. Calcification on antero-posterior (AP) radiographs of the cervical spine can confirm the presence of carotid atherosclerosis. Conventional panoramic radiographs are also useful for detecting calcification of the carotid artery. Panoramic radiographs are often obtained during routine dental treatment and oral and maxillofacial surgery. Atherosclerotic lesions can happen to be noted on the conventional panoramic radiographs. Since such lesions suggest the presence of risk of cerebral infarction, patients with calcification should be referred to specialists for a further evaluation and treatment.panoramic radiographyultrasoundcarotid atherosclerosiscerebral infarction
