Survey on the facts about life style habits among adolescent men and women as well as recognition of diabetes was administered to 149 university students with the following results: 1) When looking at the BMI separately for men and women, the percentage of men who are thin was 9.6% and for women was 23.6%, thus, showing a high percentage for the women. Also, there were no obese women among the survey sample. 2) In regards to skipping meals, men reported 21.6% and women were at 9.3% thus showing that the men ate more irregularly than the women. 3) The percentage of adolescents who drink soft drinks everyday was 28.4% for men and 9.3% for women thus showing that the men drank more soft drinks than the women. 4) Possible causes of diabetes, such as sweets and fatty foods, were reported as being enjoyed by 57.0% of the total sample. Furthermore, 64.4% of the total sample did not exercise st all. This was especially true in the female sample with 72.0% of the women reporting no exercise at all. 5) Knowledge of common symptoms of diabetes, such as having a parched throat or having to urinate frequently, was reported by less than 50% of the total sample. Furthermore, awareness of high blood sugar, as a symptom of diabetes, was reported by 54.4% of the total sample. 6) More than 50% of the total sample was aware of diabetes combining with or resulting in additional illnesses, specially blindness or the need for dialysis. 7) It was an unexpected result that more than 50% of the total sample, all being adolescents, was aware that the most effective treatment for diabetes was regular diet and exercise.
