The relationship of oxygen delivery and oxygen consumption in the muscle during and after static stretching (SS) was studied. For the study, twelve healthy untrained young males, 8 male long distance runners who have high endurance, and 10 male throwers who need speed and power were recruited. A Near-InfraRed Spectroscopy (NIRS) probe were fixed on the biceps femoris and monitoring the changes of the oxygenated hemoglobin contents(oxy-Hb), deoxygenated hemoglobin contents(deoxy-Hb) and total hemoglobin contents (total-Hb) during and after SS of hamstring. At the beginning SS, oxy-Hb, deoxy-Hb and total-Hb were lower than the rest before SS. The long distance runners were lowest results. During SS for one minute, oxy-Hb was decreasing, deox-y-Hb was increasing, and total-Hb was being constant. In long distance runners, the decrease of oxy-Hb and the increase of deoxy Hb were greater than the other groups. At the end of SS, oxy-Hb was higher, deoxy-Hb was lower and total-Hb was almost similar as compared with rest before SS. During the three minutes rest period SS, oxy-Hb showed higher than the rest before SS. Deoxy-Hb and total-Hb were eventually greater than the rest before SS although they initially decreased. In long distance runners, the decrease of oxy-Hb and the increase of deoxy-Hb was sharper than un-trained men and throwers. These results suggest that SS leads to hyperemia and improves the capacity of 02 extraction after SS. Greater aerobic capacity leads to greater improvement of 02 extraction through SS.
