体育系大学生の英語学習に対するニーズ分析と英語学力について : 他学部学生との比較において

In view of the fact that English is growing important as a communication tool in today's shrinking world, the university students are expected to acquire communicative abilities as well as highly proficient skills to read materials related to their specific studies. The development of appropriate English programs is crucial for that purpose, incorporating learning materials and teaching methodology fitted for respective students. Learning materials and teaching methods have to be selected and applied to language classes to satisfy students' needs cognitively and affectively. The primary emphasis, therefore, should be placed on a correct understanding on the part of the teacher concerning students' needs based on the needs analyses. The research reported in this paper used a questionnaire on foreign language learning and English proficiency tests to determine what kinds of needs students have in learning English and how their needs affect their language proficiency. The participants were 175 students in total from the two universities: 81 from Ohsaka University of Health and Sport Sciences(HS), and 94 from the Science of Agriculture(AS) Department of Meiji University. The responses to questionnaire items by the two groups, HS and AS, were statistically calculated for group categorizations by using Principal Components Factor Analysis with Varimax Rotation, and the factors thus categorized were further analyzed for a correlations analysis with language learning proficiency measured by the vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening comprehension tests respectively. The factor analysis resulted in a 10-factor resolution for HS students and a 11-factor resolution for AS students. Four factors, commonly observed to HS and AS, were labeled as 'satisfaction with the teaching methods and teacher's attitude', 'necessity for learning materials', 'cross- cultural commu- nication', and 'application of non- verbal techniques to language teaching'. The factors labeled as 'a positive attitude toward language learning' and 'easy learning materials and ways to understand' turned to be specifically characteristic of HS students. The results of the correlational analysis of the factors and the language proficiency tests for the HS students revealed that significant positive correlations were obtained between the vocabulary test
