Association with delinquent peers is a principal concept in differential reinforcement theory, and the association between delinquent peers and boys'delinquent behavior is well established. However, the association between delinquent peers and girls'delinquent behavior remains uncertain. This paper empirically examines several theoretically relevant causal factors for Japanese female delinquency. Some hypotheses derived from differential reinforcement and social control theories of delinquency are tested for both girls'minor delinquency and official delinquency. Results are as follows. Girl's minor delinquency is mainly caused by the mechanism of reinforcement through association with delinquent peers. Peer sanction has a significant positive effect on girls'minor delinquency, which means girls'minor delinquency is reinforced by an approval of violent sanction toward peers. Thus, it is very likely that girls'minor delinquency is mainly caused by the mechanism of negative reinforcement (escaping punishment by peers). On the other hand, girls'official delinquency is caused by association with delinquent peers, lack of attachment to parents, and low attachment to peers.
