The number of family farms, which account for about 86 percent of the total number of farmers in the U.S., has declined continuously during the past two decades. The current era of low commodity prices, free trade, and decreasing farm supports has forced many family farmers out of business. In the face of increasing pressure, some family farmers, in order to survive, have adopted new strategies such as creating new generation cooperatives (NGC) and limited liability companies (LLC). The value added to the farmers' crops, which is created by processing them, is shared by the members of these new organizations. The purpose of this case study is to examine the features of the NGCs and LLCs and the characteristics of the farmers who organized them. The secondary goal is to identify what type of collaborative enterprises are needed by family farmers and give suggestions to Japanese agriculture.
