The term "robot" was coined by Czechoslovak playwright Karel Capek when he wrote Rossum's Universal Robots in 1921. A computer for an industrial robot may have cost a million yen in 1965 ; however, in 1980 a micro-computer equivalent in performance to its predecessor in 1965 was sold at a hobby-shop for a few hundred yen. The technology involved in computer-controlled real-time systems robots has been advancing at an astounding rate. VORG 35, the design of which is shown here, is a very powerful industrial robot, its weight capacity being 35 kgs. This robot has a high speed playback capability and a large work envelope. It can be installed in a space as small as the one occupied by a single human being.
