Derivational Phonology, which had played a central role of contemporary phonology since 1968, when Chomsky & Halle published Sound Pattern of English (SPE), has replaced by Optimality Theory (OT ; McCarthy & Prince 1993, Prince & Smolensky 1993). This theory has showed its validity, but since Faithfulness Constraints are limited to Input-output ones, there are increasing other constraints, and it is too opaque to explain through OT some matters which had been studied by derivation. The contraction of Sino-Japanese cannot have been well explained because of the opacity. This thesis introduced Sympathy Theory (McCarthy 1999), which resolved the problem of opacity using Output-output Faithfulness Cons traints, and explained the contraction.
