A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is an attractive optical filter for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems, because of its narrow bandwidth. The Bragg wavelength (⋋_B)of the reflected back light from the FBG can be varied by controling a grating oitch (Λ) or an effective refractive index (n_<eff>)of the FBG oortion. Therefore, wavelength tunable FBG filter can easily be constructed by changing A and/or n_<eff> by applying heat and/or stress to the FBG portion. In this study, we propose compact tunable FBG filters using a Ni film heater coated on the FBG and a shape memory alloy (SMA) coil actuator. We also demonstrate precise wavelength control of under 1 nm by supplying currents to the heater and SMA coil. As a result, we confirmed that ⋋_B shift was observed by heating the Ni film directly coated on the FBG and by applying tensile stress to the FBG using SMA coil connected both edges of the FBG.
