Elizabeth Gaskell is one of only a few writers of Victorian novels that put much attention on the mother as a character. While her female contemporaries, the Bronte sisters and George Eliot, used male pseudonym and wrote stories for woman's self-assertion, Gaskell declared herself as a married woman woriter with the pen name of "Mrs. Gaskell"and wrote stories for the "angel in the house."For this seemingly acceptance of the Victorian domestiv ideology, some feminist critics have undervalued Gaskell's works.However, it is Gaskell's strategy that she let "Mrs. Gaskell,"her persona, stick to telling stories of the "angel" that reccomended daughters to follow their mother's way of living, while Gaskell inspired another voice that longed for the daughter's independence. This leads Gaskell herself into a dilemma, too -she hesitated over which point of view she should finally choose, mother's or daughter's. This paper focuses on and reveals Gaskell's second voice behind the mask of "Mrs. Gaskell,"and examines how she tried to manipulate it without incurring blame for "unfeminine"attitudes by her contemporary critics.
