This essay discusses the reason why Charles Lamb set a high valuation on "Isabella; or, The Pot of Basil"among the poems of John Keats.Keats and Lamb had the same opinion concerning "poetry"and"science." Both of them said, "Newton had destroyed all the poetry of the rainbow." When Keats met Lamb for the first time, they had a chance to talk about "poetry"and"science."Newton's writings discuss the scientific mechanism of the rainbow. However, to analyze it scientifically destroys the symbolic meaning the poet's words create. Poets expand the imaginative world by "narrating"and "describing."Lamb chose three poems as the most excellent of those written by Keats. The Eve of St. Agnes,""Isabella"and Lamia, all narrative poems. Lamb thought the finest was "Isabella." "Isabella"is filled with exquisite description and narration, and appeals to our sentiment. Poetry differs from science by "describing" and "narrating."
