In Country by Bobbie Ann Masib us a story in which Samantha Hughes, whose fatehr was killed in Vietnam, is trying to comprehend the meaning of the Vietnam War. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, designed by Maya Lin and Dedicated to those killed in action of the war, plays a siginificant part in the story. In building the Memorial, Lon had an idea of viewing the war strictly in terms of the 58,000 American war dead, not of politics or ideokogies. Mason makes use of this idea by setting the last scene of In Country at the Memorial, a tangible past. She insists that the past should be viewed in all candor, and not distorted or erased intentionally. Mason's message here is that history is an inheritance people must preserve to help build a better future.
