"Academic freedom" is one of the most important aspects of fundamental human rights. However, it had been severely suppressed by the Japanese Government till the defeat in 1945. Professor Takikawa who majored in criminal law at Kyoto University was exhaustively liberal in his way of thought. He actively struggled against suppression, and in 1933 he and his colleagues were removed from their positions. This event was referred to as "the Case of Kyoto University Concerning Academic Freedom". The purpose of this paper is to show the realities of the terrible suppressive affair on the part of national power, and to consider the meaning of "academic freedom" as a fundamental human right.
