English is considered to be an international language all over the world and therefore its use is acceptable outside as well as inside the English-speaking world when we want to make ourselves understood to others. For better or worse,we owe the universality and currency of the English language to the overseas expansion of the British Empire. It seems inevitable that a great colonial power should exert its cultural and linguistic influence on the rest of the world. But when we shift our standpoint from the present to the distant past,we come to realize that the British nation was once a subdued nation. Continental tribes invaded Britain one after the other across the North Sea or the English Channel. First came the Celts, second the Romans, followed by the Germanic Anglo-Saxons' intrusions, the Danes' “hit and run" raids, and ultimately the Norman conquest. During their submission to these aliens,British people devised an easy and helpful way to communicate with new-comers from overseas by making the structure of English concise and simple. To conclude,it's not being a dominant world power but having flexibility to all other alien cultures that has laid the foundation and ground work for the future world language.
