It is generally accepted that there are significant relationships between lifestyle and health status. We examined these relationships in Japanese Buddhist priests. Buddhist priests from two sects were surveyed to obtain information on lifestyle and health status. We divided the subjects into an unwell group and a healthy group based on self-evaluated health status, and examined the effects of lifestyle on health using logistic regression analysis. The findings were compared with those of the general Japanese population. The lifestyle patterns for the two sects of priests were similar to those of the general population. However, the priests differed from the general population in the two practices of breakfast and physical exercise. There was no significant relationship between lifestyle and health status in priests, although smokers in the general population were more likely to have poor health (odds ratio = 3.44). Although the lifestyle between Buddhist priests and the general population differed in only two practices, there was no significant difference in health status for the two groups.
