1. Compared with early training school for nurses, natal history of Japanese dental hygienists was outlined for changes in dental care practice, associated with a change in the socioeconomical situation and for their employment condition related with the above changes. 2. Mention was made of the change in the results of dental hygienists examination, especially, from Prefectures mandatory period to the present (unified examination), and comments were made on what the above examination should be from now on. 3. The transition of educational institutions for dental hygienists was described. At present, 135 institutions are existing; ca. 6,700 graduates are being sent out a year to the medical care society. However, since it is the actual condition that teachers of the present dental hygienist training schools have not been endowed with necessary education for training for teachers, immediate establishment of a teacher training course is keenly hoped for in order to make further improvement in the quality of the teacher. Besides, in this age appealing for preparedness and substantiality of medical care and welfare environment to cope with this aging society, what dental hygienists should be i. e. their ideal image was also referred to.
