Previous studies in Japan have not surely distinguished "education for religious sentiment" from the education for believer for the religion. In this paper, I will try to suggest some ideas through the research about practices of some private schools connected with the religious bodies and through John Dewey's explaining a concept about religion. Teachers of the religious education of private schools take relative stance for their belief in the classroom lesson. They often mention to the other religions in which they do not believe, and supply many social issues to make their students think more about their lives. They hope that the students deliberate serious questions related to themselves, society and universe, more than that the students become to believe of the religion as teachers do. Although the believers for the religion seem that those lessons for "a religious" are insufficient, in the Dewey's view students seem to have very valuable opportunities to make sense of their existence, both at the social and at the cosmic level, and to cultivate their implicit power for their life. In his book "A Common Faith", he distinguished "the religion" and "a religious" and pointed out that the self of human being was always directed toward something beyond itself and so its own unification depended upon the idea of integration of shifting scenes of the world into the imaginative totality as called Universe. As Clive Beck calls these education as "spiritual education", further study and new term for this field are needed. Because this field contains rich concept that we must look over.
