Birds of the world reported so far are roughly classified into 170 families. Japanese authorized family names of the world birds were shown and studied on the basis of the words composing its name. Family usually has the name of one single species which represents the group. Most of Japanese family names are made up of two components : Japanese traditional bird's name and modifying word. Some names are just composed of modifiers. Japanese residents and migrants were so familiar with the people that they have a specific Japanese name, while others, either rare or accidental or non-resident, are likely renamed after their foreign ones. The analysis shows that 20% of family names are made up of bird's name alone. The rest 80% were either made up of one of those following combinations : bird's name + bird's name, modifier + bird's name or just modifiers.
