This article surveys the characteristics of the co-operative relations of the funeral ceremony, especially house (IE) and neighborhood relation appeared in the funeral procession, based on a field work on two mountain villages of the northern part of Aichi prefecture in Japan. The living conditions of the two mountain villages have been modified greatly since late 1950,mainly due to the development of automobile industry on the outskirts of Toyota city and the construction of Yahagi dam which was influenced by the high degree economic development policy. Although the funeral method has been changed from inhumation to cremation since 1970,people of the two mountain villages still hold the funeral procession. The whole process of the funeral ceremony was carried out by the co-operative relations of the relatives, temples, and "sousiki kumi". And it is the "sousiki kumi" that plays the central role. The characteristics of neighborhood relation appeared in the funeral procession are as follows : (1) the participation of the head of the villages and the people of the "sousiki kumi" amplifies the death funeral beyond the private to become the village event; (2) the order of the funeral procession stresses symbolic distance of the degree of intimacy with the dead, such as distinction of the relatives, generation distinction, or sex distinction. As the result, the neighborhood relations of funeral ceremony requires money and manpower, and thus the funeral procession represents the relation that plays the choice of interaction of the neighborhood relations.
