I'll verify how the modernization has changed the relation between water and man, mainly the change of the experience or sense through one's everyday life. The place I'll see in this paper is Jourakuji in Azuchi-town, which has a creek. How the various and close relation between farmers and water was formed, how the relation was gone, I'll mention it as a monograph. Water used to be wide use in a farm village. A creek functioned not only as a supplier of water but as transportation. And it was a place for children to play in, and also a place for people to do their various kinds of work in. Farmers maintained or cared for the creek collectively and voluntarily by themselves. The creek used to be very neccessary for the farmers to live. But with the progress of the modernization, the relation between man and water was changing. The relation became less close as the farming became secondary and the water facility for farming became better. The various functions the creek had are unified as the function of taking water in paddy fields. The maintenance and care for creek has been done not by farmers but by a third party called 'tochi-kairyouku'. As the result of that, the water for farming has got property as a commodity which can or must be bought with money. The progress that the close and various relation was very neccessary in the everyday life disappeared and the progress that farmers became only consumers existed at the sametime. Therefore farmers don't feel water close. Water has became estranged to farmers. And also farmers have had less interest in water. This causes the overnutrition of the drainage owing to using a chemical fertilizer and the pollution of the drainage owing to agriclutural chemicals.
