The transliteration of words in one language (LI) into another language (L2 ) requires, among other things, the selection of the most appropriate phonemes of L 2 and the modification of the syllable structure of L 1 to fit in that of L 2 . In this article, in an attempt to propose a standard model for the transliteration of Finnish into Japanese katakana, I have raised some issues that need be considered, on the basis of a phonological comparison of the two languages and a small auditory test using Finnish informants. These issues include a need to scrutinize whether a transliterated Finnish word is auditorily acceptable, and pronounceable to Japanese native speakers, in terms of phonological constraints.
