• As clinical psychologysts we have been concerned about the enoumous psychological sufferings of those victims of the devastating earthquake that attacked Hanshin area on the early morning of January 17,1995. In this paper I am going to present the clinical understanding of the psychology of those people struggling to survive the hardships caused by the earthquake still in the middle of its aftermath. From the viewpoint of the object relations theories, the people attacked by the earthquake have had the basis of their very existence shaken off and have been thrown out to the premodial world with what Winnicott called "unthinkable" dread, which state of being we can normally encounter in the very disturbed clients of the psychotic level. I also discuss several points that we have to take notice of when we are ral ated with the victims as helping professionals. Most of all, we have to remember that they are the people who have actually experienced what we call psychotic "fragmentation" or "annihilation anxiety", not in the internal world but in their real life not long ago. We should not try to empathize with their fears and anxieties, which is beyond our capacity because the dread they experienced is the "unthinkable". What we can do is to offer them the sense of co-being with us by our sincere listening based on the psychological understandings. Thus, we shoud try to help them recover their sense of continuity of being over time and space in our relatioships with them.
