In order to evaluate environmental marine pollution, it is very : important to estimate the water exchange of bays, because many big cities are situated in the interior of the bay or inland sea and are releasing pollutants in the bay. Assuming water exchange is caused mainly by the tide, a simple calculation method of water exchange on a rectangular bay by using a computer was developed. The calculation method employed is a 2-layer box model. As a general example, the bay length of 60 km, width of 10 km and depth of 20 m was assumed. Changing some parameters, tidal range, thickness of upper layer, non-exchange rate (the rate of water flowing back to the original box wighout mixing with the water of the box under observation after half tidal period), and vertical flux rate (it happen only ebb time), the variance of horizontal salinity distribution in the bay was examined. The computation result had the same tendency as we expected : that is 1) the higher the tidal range was, the bigger the water exchange and the lower the salinity in the bay ; 2) the greater the thickness of upper layer, the smaller the effect of river water and the higher the salinity in the bay ; 3) the bigger non-exchange rate, the higher salinity ; 4) the bigger the vertical flux rate, the higher the salinity of the bay. This computation method can be applied easily to the estimation of pollutant distribution in the tide dominated bay.
