This study focuses on the artificial formation of seaweed beds and seawater exchange technology for breakwaters, which is one of the most important technologies for constructing environmentally-compatible ports / harbors and fishing ports. Physical changes in coastal areas due to the construction of such structures are outlined. The effects these physical changes have on sand-dune and rock creatures are also cited.Substrate and surface profile effects on seaweed settlement are described as techniques for incorporating an algae-zone function into breakwaters (breakwaters with an algae-zone function). Furthermore, sectional forms of structures which facilitate the artificial formation of seaweed beds and examples of their installation are shown. Principles and characteristics of seawater exchanges using wave energy and cases of their installation are discussed for breakwaters with intake holes. Finally, major challenges which must be addressed in planning breakwaters incorporating an algae-zone function and seawater exchange breakwaters are presented.
