Populations of the black-spotted pond frog, Rana nigromaculata, were found at two areas of Kita Hiroshima adjacent to Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1993. They were thought to be introduced to Kita Hiroshima several years before the finding. In 1993,distribution of the pond frog was confined to paddies in hills. Thereafter the pond frog colonized to several sites of paddies in plain. Patterns in post-tympanic dark stripes and vertebral band of the frogs were variable among sites. This suggested that the founders had colonized in small numbers to a site. The tree frog, Hyla japonica, was found to be declining at the paddies inhabited by the pond frog.
