About ninety years ago, we Japanese had the enthusiasm to publish illustrated magazines for children to educate them. In those days foreign countries meant European countries and United States. But in those magazines for children we Japanese sometimes had many mistakes. We see strange shapes of houses, clothes, utensils of foreign countries and ethnic groups in those illustrated books and magazines. And twenty years ago, we began to publish the picture books for children of traditional literature in many ethnic groups in the world. Recently we request foreign painters to draw the picture books of their own ethnic groups. In the last five years some non-governmental organizations have apted to publish the picture books to teach children of the cultures in developing countries.
