Various Muslim groups in Southeast Asia have used the Arabic script to develop their own orthographies such as Pegon, Serang and Jawi. The Jawi script (the Malay language written in Arabic characters), in particular, has been used to produce various kinds of works and documents. The purpose of this paper is to provide basic information on these manuscripts. Chapter I gives an outline of the Jaiui manuscripts in the early modern period and the academic institutions that have Jawi collections and catalogues. This chapter shows that, since the 1980s, academic institutions in Malaysia have been trying to unveil information on Jawi manuscripts. Chapter n focuses on the Jawi manuscripts in the colonial period, in particular, the local documents in the Selangor Secretariat Files (SSF). Based on the analysis of three Jawi letters sent from various people to either the British resident or the sultan, this chapter demonstrates that such documents are very useful historical materials. Finally, chapter III undertakes a review of reference materials on Jawi manuscripts in Malaysia. The future development of Malaysian studies in Japan will probably depend on the effective use of such sources.
