I have walked about Sulawesi, Butong, Tukangbesi, Ambon and Australia since 1983. When I visited the islands such as Sulawesi, Butong and Tukangbesi, I learned that the people there are still strongly connected with more eastern and southern islands' people through sailing and trade. In Australia, on the other hand, I've learned that Aborignes of northern part of this continent had had a historical exchange with Indonesians of eastern islands especially through trepang or beche-de-mer fishing by Macassans. This paper is written only aiming at surveying a historical exchange between East Indonesian People and North Australian Aborigines. There has been an accumulation of study and research of this field in Australia. However we have known little about this accumulation in Japan. Therefore my purpose writing this paper is only to introduce the results of this study to Japanese readers. Presenting the background of monsoon trade in Eastern Indonesia (Chap. 1). Chapter 2 describes the trepang fishing of Macassan in Northern Australia. Final chapter deals with the influences of the visiting of Macassan on Aborigines both in their material and cultural aspect. My conclusion is that "modern nation state" have destroyed and is destroyging the people's historical and natural contacts by its own interests.
