This study aims at clarifying the correlations between the achievement of the concrete transitivity of length and the concept of unit. For this purpose, the four steps of the process of the introduction of the unit of length have been examined, and such problems as the inconsistency of the content of teaching and the confusion of the concept of unit have been clarified. Next the testing method by which to investigate the achievement of the concept of unit has been examined, pointing out various problems of the method of analyzing the result and that this test has failed to create the concept. Lastly the study of the trasitivity of length has been introduced by referring to the controversy between Braine and Smedslund. The difference in the method of experiement between these two scholars, the ambiguity of the criteria by which to determine the achievement of transitivity and that the said controversy completely disregards the correlations between transitivity and the concept of unit. The writer points out problems to be pursued concerning the study of transitivity and the concept of unit, and emphasizes the necessity of the study aiming at clarifying the process of the creation of unit.
