Along with the recent tendency of encouraging autonomous learning in the field of language education, the LL (Language Laboratory) of Kochi University has been exploring how to create an ideal environment for supporting students towards autonomy. The LL after long years of use now requires substantial maintenance in the near future. To respond to this situation, various steps have been taken so far. This paper aims to outline a feasible picture of the LL as a comprehensive support system. Such systems are quite popular as self-access centers in advanced countries of this area. Firstly we survey the general management of LLs at other national universities and recent trends in LL renewal, which demand multipurpose facilities rather than a self-study facility itself. Secondly the present situation of the usage of Kochi University LL and some activities are examined to consider the problems and prospects with regard not only to hardware but also software, and including various other services and human resources. What our LL is aiming to achieve is not only support for language learning but also a wider view of education as intercultural communication, which is the ultimate goal of learning a foreign language. Lastly the summary of these issues presents an optimum example for a future LL as a self-access center. We can also expect the application of this support system to various areas such as adult education and as a contribution to the local community in the future.
