Along with figures such as the Nobel Laureate in Economics Dr. Amartya Sen and Prof. Jagdish Bhagwati of the Columbia University, the late Dr. Sukhamoy Chakravarty (1932-1987) was one of the major representative Indian economists of recent times. He was the central moving force in shaping the economic policies of India during the l970s and l980s, in his capacities as member of the Planning Commission and Chairman of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council from 1971 to the time of his death in 1987. This paper traces his thought and analyses of Indian economic problems, considering how and why he so deeply influenced Indian economic management and economic ideas. The contents of the paper is outlined as follows: (1) Chakravarty's evaluation of Mahalanobis' growth model, (2) development ideas of Chakravarty, (3) his analysis of the Indian economy, (4) his comparison of South Asia and East Asia, (5) his devotion to the later phase of the thought of John R. Hicks.
