While observing model lesson English classes taught by practice teachers from Nara University of Education, I felt that the weakest part of their lessons was their limited and generally poor pronunciation teaching; also they seemed to be unaware of the possibility of letting their students engage in independent communication strategies, like pair-practice, to reinforce their grammar study. It seemed natural to offer an oral skills course focusing on these two weak areas. The course has been useful in helping most of our English majors to more effectively teach various difficult English sounds. The university students also have received valuable experience in developing and directing independent communicative exercises based on lessons in the junior high textbooks. The purpose of this paper is to explain the development and scope of this course in detail, including methodology and some problems which were encountered, in hopes that other university teachers might be interested in giving such a course, particularly in universities which prepare students to become English teachers.
